Hng’s 31-year Gerakan exit puts focus on political direction

After 31 years in Gerakan, Hng Chee Wey has decided to leave the political party, sharing his farewell message on Facebook. In his message, Hng emphasized the importance of political tolerance, democratic values, and sticking to one's principles. He did not mention any specific party or politician in his post, but his comments about shifting political affiliations and the dangers of absolute power coincide with Gerakan's struggle to maintain its place within Perikatan Nasional (PN), especially in the context of PAS's growing influence within the coalition.

Hng admitted that leaving behind people and things built over 31 years was challenging, describing his time in politics as a period filled with shared ideals, disagreements, setbacks, and successes. He highlighted that political differences are a normal part of a democratic society and should not lead to enmity. Hng stressed that political views can differ, and people should respect each other's beliefs without becoming sworn enemies. He also encouraged rational and respectful dialogue when faced with opposing opinions.

A senior figure in Gerakan, Hng served as treasurer, state secretary, and national treasurer during his tenure. He called for Malaysia to progress towards a more democratic, open, inclusive, rational, and progressive society. Hng also warned against the "feudal mindset of absolute power, strict hierarchy, and mutual oppression." He defined the end of politics as not the power itself but rather the dignity of the people, fairness in society, and the potential for a better future for the next generation.

Although Hng did not state the reason behind his decision to leave, he framed it as a personal choice to close a chapter without bitterness. He expressed his commitment to holding onto his beliefs while others pursued their own political paths. Hng asked that even if they are no longer together, they do not become enemies and thanked those who shared his journey. He concluded his message with a goodbye and a promise to see each other again as friends.
