Gauff celebrates breakthrough success of Black Americans at US Open

New York: Coco Gauff, the world number four and two-time Grand Slam winner, drew inspiration from Frances Tiafoe's remarkable fightback in the US Open to reach the semi-finals. On Wednesday, Gauff saved two match points in a closely contested match against reigning French Open champion Mirra Andreeva, prevailing 2-6, 7-6 (9/7), 6-2.

Gauff advanced to a Thursday match at Arthur Ashe Stadium against Elena Rybakina, who defeated Chinese qualifier Zheng Qinwen 3-6, 6-1, 6-4. Gauff's victory mirrored Tiafoe's own comeback triumph on Tuesday, where he defeated Alex Michelsen in a grueling five-setter. Gauff expressed gratitude towards Tiafoe, stating, "Frances was looking – I was watching the end of that set and it looked like he was down and out."

Gauff emphasized the importance of belief in her own game, acknowledging that her success in moments of challenge could eventually translate into reality. The 22-year-old American highlighted Tiafoe's positive influence on the tour, praising his charismatic presence and respect for fellow players.
