Fake GTA 6 malware is on the rise as release date nears — here are some of the worst scams to look out for

As the release date for Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6) draws closer, security researchers Huntress have warned of a surge in fake GTA 6 ISOs spreading malicious malware. GTA 6, developed by Rockstar Games, is the highly anticipated sequel to the immensely popular GTA 5 and is expected to launch on November 19, 2026. Before the official release, any game-related content found online should be considered a potential security risk.

These fraudulent ISO files, which contain complete digital copies of the game, are riddled with various types of malware. Huntress has identified remote access trojans (RATs), infostealers, and ransomware disguised within these packages, including NJRAT and CDRAT (a remote access trojan), Mercurial Grabber (an infostealer), and Chaos Ransomware. The malware is designed to infiltrate unsuspecting users' systems, encrypting files and demanding payment for decryption.

Security experts urge users to avoid downloading pirated games, especially those released before the official date. If a user does fall victim to one of these scams, they are advised to disconnect the infected device from the internet, reset all passwords and enable two-factor authentication (2FA) where possible, and perform a complete reinstallation of the operating system.

While none of the malware contained in these fraudulent ISO files is brand-new, Huntress emphasizes that most antivirus programs can still detect and prevent infections. Users should exercise caution and refrain from downloading cracked or pirated software, particularly for games that have not yet been released.
