Exclusive-UK deepens reliance on Musk's SpaceX, spending nearly $40 million on satellite services

Britain has recently allocated nearly $40 million to SpaceX's satellite services, expanding its reliance on Elon Musk's company for military communications. This move has brought Britain to the forefront as the first non-US country to publicly acknowledge the adoption of Starshield, SpaceX's service tailored for military and intelligence missions.

In contrast to consumer-oriented Starlink, Starshield is marketed towards government and national security customers. The UK's defence ministry has reported possessing approximately 1,000 Starshield terminals and 500 Starlink terminals, having spent a combined £29.1 million ($37.6 million) on these services. The disclosure of these expenditures comes amid growing European concerns over the continent's security, as nations seek to strengthen their own defence capabilities.

The UK's defence ministry transitioned to Starshield in mid-2022 and has since been shifting its operational military communications traffic to this service, according to Reuters. Starshield offers enhanced encryption, military-specific terms of service, and the highest network prioritization, with flexible licensing arrangements and expanded coverage.

This shift to Starshield follows the UK's adoption of Starlink in 2022, and it comes at a time when European governments are prioritizing their own defence infrastructure in response to apprehensions about the US's long-term commitment to the continent's security. SpaceX has been actively differentiating between Starlink and Starshield, with the latter being marketed as a service intended exclusively for government and national security customers.

Musk has publicly criticized British government policies during Keir Starmer's premiership, which was recently succeeded by Andy Burnham. Despite this, SpaceX did not respond to inquiries regarding which countries have access to Starshield. The UK's defence ministry adopted Starshield after SpaceX mandated that Starlink be used solely for morale, welfare, recreation, and training purposes.

Starshield operates using the same satellite constellation, ground stations, and terrestrial infrastructure as Starlink but through dedicated terminals and separate ground-based network gateways. Britain began using Starshield's airtime with its existing Starlink terminals in 2024 and purchased its first dedicated Starshield terminals the previous year.

In comparison to Starlink, Starshield can be significantly more expensive, with two Starshield plans costing £5,500 a month for five terabytes of data and an unlimited plan priced at £25,000 a month. In contrast, Starlink business customers in the UK can pay £1,830 a month for two terabytes of global data, alongside a range of cheaper plans.

Each Starshield terminal costs between £4,000 and £7,000, which is at least double the price of business-grade Starlink terminals.
