Dangote Refinery shows Africa can execute projects at massive scale — Sanwo-Olu

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has hailed the Dangote Refinery as proof that Africa possesses the capability to undertake large-scale projects, emphasizing its significance in advancing the continent's development. During the Lagos-New York 2026 Learning Journey, hosted by the Aliko Dangote Foundation and the Forum of Young Global Leaders, the governor pointed out that the refinery's transformation of an open-water area into a major industrial facility showcases the vision, funding, and determination necessary for constructing such ventures in Lagos.

The governor commended Aliko Dangote and the Aliko Dangote Foundation, alongside the Forum of Young Global Leaders, The Africa Center, and Afreximbank for their contributions to the project. Sanwo-Olu highlighted that the Lekki corridor's development embodies Lagos' strategy for infrastructure and economic growth, emphasizing the importance of creating an environment conducive to private-sector investment.

Acknowledging that Lagos is currently grappling with many of the challenges Africa will face in the coming century, including transportation, energy, and a burgeoning young population, the governor stressed the need to establish efficient systems to facilitate future investors' endeavors.

He argued that relying on the exceptional efforts of a single individual is not a sustainable business model, emphasizing that the refinery's success should be measured not only by its output but also by the ease with which subsequent investors can establish similar large-scale projects in Lagos. The governor underscored his administration's investments in the Lekki corridor, including the Lekki Deep Sea Port, Lekki Free Zone, Blue Line rail, and plans for an airport, all aimed at constructing an integrated infrastructure network that supports further investment.

Sanwo-Olu urged the Young Global Leaders attending the learning journey to transform their discussions on Africa's development into tangible partnerships, emphasizing that Africa is already progressing and now is the time to convert conversations into collaborations.
