Canada signs CAD 350 mln agreement with Ukraine to supply air defence missiles – PM Carney

According to diplomat and international analyst Ihor Dolhov, President Zelensky's upcoming visit to Canada could potentially lead to new defense and energy deals. Dolhov emphasized that such visits are crucial as they contribute to Ukraine's efforts in protecting its airspace and ensuring the smooth functioning of its energy system, especially in the face of potential Russian attacks.

He noted that these visits become particularly important in the current context, as the ongoing war is unlikely to end in the near future. Dolhov pointed out that discussions on these issues were also a part of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group meeting in Ramstein format. He highlighted that the protection of Ukrainian skies, defense against Russian attacks, and ensuring energy infrastructure resilience during the harsh winter are the main concerns at present.

Prior to his trip to Canada, President Zelensky had visited Norway and Iceland. Dolhov explained that though the Norway trip was prompted by a mourning event, it also facilitated talks on further support for Ukraine. Norway is a key partner for Ukraine in military and financial assistance, particularly in procuring missiles for the U.S.-made Patriot air defense systems.

Notably, Norway has pledged another $200 million to purchase Patriot missiles from the United States at the latest Ramstein meeting. Dolhov also stressed the importance of cooperation between Ukrainian and Norwegian defense industries and described the partnership with Canada as strategic for Ukraine. He noted that this is the first state visit by the Ukrainian President to Canada, marking a significant event as it represents various aspects of the strategic partnership between the two nations.

In terms of war cooperation, support from Canadian businesses and companies, and the substantial Ukrainian diaspora in Canada, Dolhov highlighted the importance of this partnership. Regarding energy cooperation, Dolhov speculated that Canada's significant oil and gas reserves and advanced equipment could prove beneficial in supporting Ukraine's energy infrastructure during the challenging winter months.

He expressed optimism about the possibility of new agreements and concrete results in both defense and energy sectors following Zelensky's visit to Canada.
