Bills’ National Anthem Decision Met With Resistance From Fans

The Buffalo Bills, preparing to launch their new stadium in the upcoming season, have sparked controversy regarding the performance of the National Anthem before their inaugural game. The team will kick off their campaign on the road against the Houston Texans on September 13, before hosting their first home game against the Detroit Lions on September 17 at Orchard Park's new Highmark Stadium.

As per NFL tradition, the singing or playing of the U.S. national anthem, "The Star-Spangled Banner," will be performed by Bills fan Auliʻi Cravalho at Thursday Night Football. Additionally, the team will showcase a special rendition of Canada's national anthem, "O Canada."

The decision has drawn a wave of criticism from fans, who expressed their displeasure on the Bills' X post announcing the plan. Many commented that it is an American sport played in America, and they question the rationale behind including Canada's anthem. One user questioned whether the Bills had relocated to Canada, while another argued that the Canadian fanbase is not a justification for the song.

Barenaked Ladies, a well-known Toronto-based band, will perform "O Canada" to demonstrate respect and appreciation for Canadian fans, noting that Buffalo is only two hours away from Toronto where a significant portion of the fanbase resides. As of now, the Bills are among the top three contenders for the 2027 Super Bowl, with a +1000 odds to claim the title, closely followed by the Los Angeles Rams, who are the +500 favorites.

The team's home opener against the Detroit Lions is scheduled for Thursday, September 17, with a kickoff time of 8:15 p.m. ET.
