Australia jails marketing executive who compiled reports for China

An Australian marketing executive, Alexander Csergo, was sentenced to over three years in jail for reckless foreign interference after compiling reports for Chinese intelligence, a Sydney court ruled on Thursday. Csergo, 58, was arrested in Sydney in 2023, following his return from Shanghai, where he had met two suspected Chinese agents, Ken and Evelyn, on the professional networking site LinkedIn.

The court discovered that Csergo had accepted cash in envelopes and exchanged thousands of WeChat messages with the pair over a two-year period. The reports he compiled addressed topics such as Australia's AUKUS nuclear submarine partnership with the United States and Britain, and critical minerals. The court heard that Csergo had argued that much of the information in the reports was publicly available.

Australia's spy chief Mike Burgess emphasized that foreign interference is an assault on Australian sovereignty, highlighting that the spies targeted individuals in Australia's intelligence community, Prime Minister's Office, defence sector, judiciary, and think tanks. This is the second person convicted under foreign interference laws introduced in 2018 and the first person sentenced for reckless foreign interference.
