At least 5 dead, more than 80 missing in Philippines passenger ferry fire

At least five lives were lost and over 85 people remain missing following a devastating fire aboard a passenger ferry in a popular tourist area of the Philippines, according to the country's coast guard. The M/V June Aster caught fire approximately 1.2 nautical miles northeast of Coron city around 6:45 p.m. on Wednesday. So far, 43 individuals have been successfully rescued, with footage showing extensive sections of the vessel engulfed in flames and survivors being pulled from the water to safety. Life jackets were also distributed to those in need as they were guided to shallower waters.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, with officials noting that bad weather and large waves presented significant challenges to rescue efforts. The ship had drifted roughly 7.68 nautical miles (14.2 kilometers) off the village of Turda by noon on Thursday, still afloat and emitting smoke. The ferry, carrying 134 people - 117 passengers and 17 crew members as per the manifest - was approximately four nautical miles (7.4 kilometers) away from its destination when it sent a distress signal.

Rescuers attempted to board the ship, but thick smoke made it challenging to approach. The Philippine Coast Guard is coordinating with the shipping company and maritime authorities to gather more details about the incident. Search and rescue operations were halted on Thursday evening and are expected to resume in the morning. Initial reports from a survivor suggested a loud explosion, followed quickly by smoke and fire, with the incident unfolding within seconds.

The Philippine Coast Guard, along with a military vessel, other government boats, volunteers, and fishermen, were involved in the search-and-rescue operation. The ferry had departed from Manila, heading towards its destination of Coron in Palawan province, a popular tourist destination known for its crystal-clear waters, jagged cliffs, and distinct rock formations.
