$350m project to end Weija Dam flooding to commence this year

A $350 million flood control project is set to commence by the end of 2026 in an effort to combat the recurring flooding caused by water overflowing from Weija Dam. The Dam Spillage Flood Control (DSFC) Project, a collaboration between the Weija-Gbawe Municipal Assembly and Hi-Limit Group, a private development partner, aims to create a high-level reinforced concrete levee canal extending from the Weija Dam site to the Atlantic Ocean.

The project also includes the development of inner town roads in Tetegu. The levee will channel excess water directly into the Atlantic Ocean, preventing flooding downstream. Hi-Limit Group's CEO, Mr. Emmanuel Larbi, stated that the project provides a permanent solution to flooding caused by the Weija Dam's perennial spillage. Mr. Larbi has engaged communities in the project and assured them that demolitions will not occur; the main goal is to protect residents from flooding.

The project has secured $325 million in funding from Hi-Limit Group's financial partners in the United States, with the remaining $25 million expected to be raised through internal mobilization and a canal levy. The United Bank for Africa Ghana is assisting with the collection of counterpart funds and managing project disbursements to contractors and service providers.
