$350m project to end Weija Dam flooding to commence this year

A $350 million flood control project is set to commence in December 2026, targeting the perennial flooding caused by spillage from the Weija Dam. The Dam Spillage Flood Control (DSFC) Project, a collaboration between the Weija-Gbawe Municipal Assembly and Hi-Limit Group, aims to protect downstream communities from inundation. The project involves constructing a high-level reinforced concrete levee canal from the Weija Dam to the Atlantic Ocean, complete with a permanent estuary.

Hi-Limit Group CEO Emmanuel Larbi explained that the canal would channel excess water directly into the ocean, preventing it from causing flooding. Community engagement activities have been carried out, with residents expressing their support for the initiative. The Assembly is expected to contribute $25 million in counterpart funding, while Hi-Limit Group has secured $325 million from financial partners in the United States.

The China Railway Construction Engineering Group has been appointed as the General Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) Contractor for the project.
