Why the UK is banning goods from illegal Israeli settlements in West Bank

Twelve nations, including France, the United Kingdom and Canada, announced plans on Tuesday to impose sanctions on trade with Israeli settlements in the West Bank following a surge in attacks by Israeli settlers against Palestinian villages in the occupied territory. Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Ireland, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden also pledged to restrict trade with the settlements, according to a joint statement from their foreign ministers.

Ireland and Spain have already enacted measures against trade with Israeli settlements, while France has been advocating for a similar decision from the European Union, which has been blocked by certain members.

The 12 ministers stated that Israel's actions in the West Bank are hindering the prospects for a two-state solution, characterized by the coexistence of an Israeli and a Palestinian state. They emphasized the rapid deterioration of the situation, driven by unprecedented levels of settler violence and expansion of settlements. The ministers called upon Israel to immediately cease settlement expansion and administrative powers for civilians, ensure accountability for settler violence, and investigate allegations against Israeli forces.

The United Kingdom's Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband criticized the Israeli government for disregarding what he termed "ethnic cleansing" by settlers in the West Bank. In a video statement, Miliband described the situation in Palestine as a "moral emergency" and highlighted the evidence of war crimes in Gaza. He stated that Israel had not only ignored these developments but also enabled the forced displacement of Palestinians through statements and actions.

Miliband affirmed that London would be more assertive in supporting the two-state solution, vowing to ban imports of goods from illegal settlements, target services supporting new settlement construction, and prohibit advertisements for settlement properties and land.

An Israeli court recently rejected a petition from rights groups seeking to halt the construction of a settlement in the occupied West Bank, which would significantly disrupt the continuity of a future Palestinian state. The Jerusalem District Court dismissed the motion, arguing that there were no imminent irreversible physical changes and that legal safeguards were in place for the development project.

The E1 plan, approved by Israel last year, would further isolate Israeli-occupied east Jerusalem from the rest of the West Bank. The decision allows Israel to establish facts on the ground, making it difficult to reverse the destructive reality created by the settlement expansion.
