2027 AFCONQ: We are hoping Accra Sports Stadium will be ready for Gambia game – GFA

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) expresses confidence that the rehabilitation of Accra Sports Stadium will be finished promptly for Ghana's upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against The Gambia. The National Sports Authority (NSA) has halted domestic football activities at the stadium while the necessary improvements are being made to meet Confederation of African Football (CAF) standards.

As a result, Hearts of Oak have been temporarily moved to play their opening home matches of the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League at the University of Ghana Stadium. GFA communications director Henry Asante Twum assures that the pitch at Accra Sports Stadium will be prepared before the crucial match against The Gambia. "It's one of the reasons why there is no domestic football at the Accra Sports Stadium currently," Twum clarifies to 3Sports.

He believes the pitch will be ready well before the scheduled game. The Accra Sports Stadium is currently the sole venue in Ghana authorized to host international matches, making the progress on the pitch vital for Ghana's AFCON qualifying campaign. A meeting between the GFA and Greengrass Technologies, the firm overseeing the pitch work, took place recently.

The GFA hopes the pitch will be fully operational soon, starting from tomorrow, to facilitate the match against The Gambia. Ghana is set to host The Gambia as part of their 2027 AFCON qualifying fixtures. Earlier, Ghana will face Côte d'Ivoire away on September 24, followed by the Gambia match three days later.
