US officials are grappling with intense pressure and mounting threats amid a clash between data center behemoths and rural communities. Rising land values have pushed AI infrastructure development to unprecedented levels, prompting developers to bid astronomically high prices for rural property. In Michigan, township officials in Saline Township received death threats after endorsing a major data center proposal involving Oracle and OpenAI, illustrating the escalating tensions.

Similar intimidation tactics have been employed in other communities, such as Box Elder County in Utah and Marshall, Michigan, where council members faced threats and warnings following approvals of development-related resolutions and restrictions on new projects. In Salix, Iowa, a vote on a development proposal was postponed after receiving threatening social media posts.

The conflict extends beyond security concerns, with AI companies rapidly snapping up suitable sites with infrastructure, pushing prices to far exceed agricultural values. Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller revealed that developers often offer farmers 10 times the value of their farms, leaving landowners with little choice but to sell.

The National Association of Home Builders warns that data center developers can outbid housing companies due to their vastly different financial constraints. Residents worry that large AI facilities could strain local services, including electricity networks, water supplies, and roads.
