UN agency seeks zero tolerance for gender-based violence in schools, communities

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has called for an end to gender-based violence in schools and communities, emphasizing that such abuse hinders development and infringes upon the fundamental right of young people to live without harm. During a sensitization program on the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Law in Bauchi, UNFPA's Gender and Reproductive Health Analyst and Coordinator, Mrs Deborah Tabara, highlighted the importance of placing young people at the heart of development by safeguarding them from violence.

Tabara stressed that gender-based violence (GBV) is not merely a social issue but a development one, warning that the consequences of such violence are severe in both public and private spaces, leading to stunted individual and societal advancement. She underscored the necessity of a zero tolerance policy towards GBV, stating that silence in the face of abuse encourages further instances.

The Director of Public Prosecution for Bauchi State, Garba Dabo Maleka, emphasized the need for students to stand against sexual exploitation for academic benefits and to utilize available reporting mechanisms. These include contacting the DPP's office, the Permanent Secretary, local police, and campus counselors. Maleka also advised victims of rape to seek immediate medical attention.

ATAP's management, on behalf of the Rector, Dr Hashim Sabo Bello, stated the school's commitment to the state's anti-GBV policy, noting the institution already has a gender and sexual harassment committee. The committee, headed by Dr Alhaji Abdulkadir Waziri, Director of Ethics and Compliance, pledged to take disciplinary and legal action against perpetrators.

Gender Desk Officer at the Ministry of Justice, Maimuna Ibrahim Yusuf, called for the establishment of functional gender desks and grievance committees in all tertiary institutions within Bauchi, aimed at educating students and staff about GBV, its legal ramifications, and enhancing reporting channels.
