Adutwum calls for SHS resit system and proper transcripts

Former Education Minister Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum has been advocating for reforms to Ghana’s Senior High School (SHS) education system. During his tenure in government, he pushed for the introduction of transcript systems alongside West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results, so students could have a clearer record of their academic performance.

Dr Adutwum emphasized that students who struggle in particular subjects should have opportunities to improve, rather than being halted by a failed examination. He argued that failing a subject such as Mathematics should not mean the end of a student's academic progress. Dr Adutwum also proposed a resit arrangement, allowing students to retake subjects they fail, and receive academic support instead of solely being judged by the outcome of a single examination.

Efforts were made to engage examiners in training teachers across various schools to enhance teaching and learning outcomes. Dr Adutwum also touched on the future of the double-track system, stating that its elimination would require a demand-driven approach to the development of new schools.
