Umno to let top leadership decide GE16 electoral cooperation

Umno has announced that the top party leadership will make the final decisions on seat allocations and electoral partners for the 16th General Election (GE16). This was revealed by Umno Information chief Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said during a presidential briefing held in conjunction with the 2026 Umno general assembly.

Zahid emphasized that decisions on party matters should be left to the top party leadership, acknowledging that the federal and state levels are different. While the "blue wave" of support is becoming a clear reality, Azalina stressed the importance of uniting party members and maintaining focus ahead of GE16.

Negeri Sembilan Umno liaison committee chairman Datuk Seri Jalaluddin Alias echoed similar sentiments, stating that the president's message provided important guidance and a mandate for the party to face upcoming elections, including the Melaka state election. He believed that Umno and Barisan Nasional could repeat their major victories in Johor and Negri Sembilan, but only if there was solidarity and unity among the party's election machinery and leaders at all levels.

Former Pasir Salak MP Tajuddin Abdul Rahman hinted at the possibility of forging cooperation with political adversaries in the past. While he did not name any specific parties, Rahman suggested that Umno may choose to work with people who were once considered enemies, as long as unity and solidarity among the party's leaders and members were maintained.
