Umno says Pakatan applying double standard on royal pardons, points to Anwar’s 2018 case

On September 9, Umno accused Pakatan Harapan (PH) of employing a double standard regarding royal pardons, following a statement that those convicted in prominent corruption cases should serve their entire sentences. Umno secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki pointed out that PH backed the full pardon granted to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in 2018, despite Anwar not having served the entirety of his five-year prison term.

Asyraf questioned why a different standard should apply to others if PH could support Anwar's pardon.

Asyraf also argued that PH's stance seemed to challenge the Yang di-Pertuan Agong's prerogative to grant pardons, as outlined in Article 42(1) of the Federal Constitution. He expressed that Umno would not anticipate the Pardons Board's deliberations or demand a specific outcome, emphasizing that whatever decision made through the appropriate legal process should be respected by everyone.

Additionally, Asyraf highlighted that PH had consistently undermined and questioned the Malay Rulers' institution for political gain, which he deemed inconsistent with the principles and agreements made when the unity government was established. Umno reaffirmed its commitment to defending the Yang di-Pertuan Agong's institution and constitutional powers.

PH had previously asserted that individuals convicted of corruption or abuse of power, especially in high-profile cases, must serve the full sentences handed down by the courts; however, they did not explicitly mention former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak or directly reference the Pardons Board. This statement emerged as reports suggested the Federal Territories Pardons Board might discuss Najib's clemency application during its meeting that week.
