UK rejects Israel's 'damaging' retaliation over West Bank settlement sanctions

Canada and 11 European countries are set to implement trade barriers on products from Israeli settlements in the West Bank. Foreign ministers from Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Iceland, Ireland, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom expressed concern over the rapidly deteriorating situation in the region.

They highlighted the surge in settler violence and settlement expansion, stating that such actions by Israel are obstructing the prospects for a two-state solution. The joint declaration called for an immediate cessation of settlement growth and accountability measures for settler violence, emphasizing that the settlements are deemed illegal under international law.

Britain pledged to prohibit the importation of products from these settlements and impose "maximum legal sanctions" against the settlements and their associates, following a sharp increase in tensions with Israel. This move prompted Israel's Finance Minister, Bezalel Smotrich, to demand the removal of the British ambassador. France also signaled its intention to ban settlement products.

British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband outlined a series of punitive measures against the settlements in the House of Commons, asserting the UK's acknowledgment of the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians in certain parts of the West Bank - a scenario the Israeli government has often ignored. These actions follow a pattern of settlement proliferation, notably a tender awarded for constructing around 1,200 units in the strategic "E1" area, east of Jerusalem, a development that Britain warns jeopardizes the prospects of a contiguous Palestinian state.
