UK prime minister vows to be 'relentless' in defending the Falkland Islanders' choice

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham pledged on Wednesday to be "relentless" in defending the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands and the Islanders' right to remain British citizens. During Prime Minister's Questions, Burnham emphasized that the UK will always respect the Islanders' choice, with no change in position under his government. He avoided referencing Argentine President Javier Milei or Argentina directly, focusing solely on the Falkland Islands in a session exceeding an hour.

Responding to Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch's accusation of weakness on defense and sovereignty, Burnham defended the UK's commitment to the Diego Garcia military base and stated the country is in talks with the US regarding the agreement to lease it. On military spending, Burnham affirmed adherence to NATO's 3.5% expenditure target by 2035, with an interim 3% goal, though he did not directly answer reproach over Chancellor's resignation over the target.

Meanwhile, Argentina has intensified its legal and diplomatic actions against companies involved in hydrocarbon projects near the Falkland Islands, filing criminal complaints and increasing administrative proceedings. The dispute stems from Argentine President Milei's recent statements, asserting the Islanders have no right to self-determination, a viewpoint previously expressed by the President.

Despite the 2013 referendum where 99.8% of Falkland Islanders chose to remain a British territory, sovereignty remains unresolved between the UK and Argentina.
