UK prime minister vows to be 'relentless' in defending the Falkland Islanders' choice

On Wednesday, British Prime Minister Andy Burnham vowed during Prime Minister's Questions to "relentlessly" defend the right of Falkland Islanders to choose British sovereignty. The session focused on defense spending and overseas territory sovereignty. Burnham affirmed, "We will always respect the rights of the Falkland Islanders to choose to be British," reaffirming his government's stance would remain unchanged.

He refrained from mentioning Argentine leader Javier Milei or Argentina's claims during his remarks. Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch criticized the Labour government's defense and sovereignty policies, accusing them of weakness and suggesting Argentina was emboldened by Britain's perceived vulnerability regarding the Chagos Islands.

Burnham dismissed these accusations, stating the United Kingdom would not cede control of the Diego Garcia base, which is leased from the U.S. He also affirmed the UK's commitment to NATO's 3.5% defense spending target by 2035, with an interim goal of 3%. Burnham did not directly comment on the previous defense secretary's resignation over the 3% target.

Earlier, International Development Minister Kirsty McNeill sought to de-escalate tensions by emphasizing the UK's intent to maintain a positive relationship with Argentina. Meanwhile, Argentina intensified its legal and administrative actions against companies involved in hydrocarbon projects near the Falkland Islands, citing violations of Argentine law.

These actions followed Argentine President Javier Milei's statement that islanders have no right to self-determination, a position he previously expressed support for. The dispute over the Falklands has its roots in the 1982 war and the 2013 referendum where 99.8% of islanders voted to remain a British overseas territory.
