UK Lawmakers Are Freaking Out Over AI’s Summer of Chaos

UK lawmakers are expressing alarm over the rapid development of AI technology, fearing it may lead to catastrophic consequences. Labour MP Darren Jones has called on the UK government to step in and regulate AI, joining other lawmakers from various political parties in drafting a bill to ban the development, deployment, and operation of artificial superintelligence.

This bill would grant the government the ability to monitor and control the technology's development at various stages, including at the chip level. The legislation also aims to protect national security by preventing AI agents from seizing control of critical infrastructure and engaging in sophisticated influence operations. MPs have expressed concerns about AI's rapid development and the potential for these systems to become uncontrollable, citing recent incidents of rogue AI agents.

They argue that urgent action is needed to avoid the worst-case scenarios, such as AI systems that could cause human extinction. The bill's drafting was facilitated by the nonprofit ControlAI, backed by Skype's founding engineer and DeepMind investor, Jaan Tallinn. ControlAI's founder, Connor Leahy, has been active in promoting awareness about the existential risk posed by superintelligence.

Despite the UK government's efforts to introduce AI regulation, lawmakers feel that more needs to be done, as the current measures do not seem sufficient. Public opinion supports independent regulation of AI, with over 90% of Britons favoring it, according to a recent poll. However, lawmakers argue that the government has been unresponsive to these concerns, and public trust in AI technology may suffer if action is not taken soon.
