Trump's Christmas cash draws scrutiny

The recipients of the $45,000 gifts are Natalie Harp, Margo Martin, and Chamberlain Harris, while Walt Nauta, the director of Oval Office operations, received $20,000.

The three aides who received $45,000 are each paid $150,000 annually, making the gifts equivalent to 30% of their salaries. Together, these payments amount to $135,000. Nauta, who earns $175,000, was given the smaller gift. All four aides have described the gifts as Christmas presents given by the president, with Harp and Martin listing Palm Beach, Florida as their residence, and Harris listing Washington DC.

The White House maintains that these gifts are standard practice and do not violate any legal or ethical standards. They argue that the payments are unrelated to the recipients' official duties, making them permissible. However, the issue has drawn scrutiny from legal experts who point to a criminal statute that prohibits executive branch employees from receiving compensation from sources other than the U.S. government. This statute carries penalties including fines or up to a year in prison for non-willful breaches.
