‘Totally unacceptable’ – Amnesty International blasts Peter Obi blockade in Benue

Amnesty International has harshly criticized the blockade of the convoy carrying Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, presidential candidate Peter Obi in Benue state. In a statement posted on its verified X account, the human rights organization deemed the action a dangerous display of political repression, stating that it is "totally unacceptable."

Amnesty International highlighted the incident as raising significant concerns about political freedom and the safety of opposition candidates in the lead-up to the 2027 elections. The group emphasized that Nigerians should be allowed to travel freely throughout the country, regardless of their political beliefs, without needing any form of permission or prior notice.

"Amnesty International deeply is concerned by the reckless and unlawful use of political thugs that blocked the presidential candidate of opposition NDC Peter Obi from entering Benue State," the statement read. Tensions had been brewing in Benue State on Tuesday following reports of suspected thugs obstructing a major road as Obi arrived in the state.

Following the incident, Peter Obi addressed the situation, clarifying that his visit to the state was strictly humanitarian and not campaign-driven.
