Torrevieja rower Javier Garcia powers into world’s top six after life-changing injury

Torrevieja's Javier Garcia has made a remarkable comeback in the world of Paralympic rowing after a life-changing spinal cord injury sustained in a 2018 road accident. At the age of 30, Garcia has now secured a spot within the world's top six, achieving his best international result yet at the World Rowing Championships in Amsterdam.

The athlete, representing Real Club Nautico de Torrevieja, finished in sixth place in the PR1 single sculls event, driven by a journey that began with an accident at the age of 18. Despite the severe injury, Garcia's determination led him to return to rowing in 2021, competing in the PR1 category. His consistent performance quickly earned him Spanish champion status and qualification for the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.

Since then, Garcia's career has continued to progress, culminating in his sixth-place finish at the World Rowing Championships in Lucerne. Despite challenging conditions such as heavy rain and an electrical storm, Garcia managed to secure his place among the world's elite rowers. As he sets his sights on the Los Angeles 2028 Paralympic Games, Garcia's resilience and dedication have been instrumental in his journey from a life-altering injury to becoming an elite competitor.
