Séjourné says von der Leyen will decide his fate if romantic partner wins French presidency

EU industry chief Stéphane Séjourné has stated in an interview that Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will decide whether he must leave his post if his romantic partner, Gabriel Attal, wins France's presidential election next year. Séjourné, who took office to prioritize EU interests over national matters, acknowledged that the relationship with Attal, leader of President Emmanuel Macron's party Renaissance, could pose a conflict of interest.

Despite being bound by a five-year term post-election, Séjourné did not believe there would be a conflict if Attal won, but acknowledged it was a "legitimate" concern. The couple had a two-year break before rekindling their relationship in 2024. Attal, who briefly served as prime minister in 2024, has been trailing in the polls since declaring his candidacy in May, behind far-right candidate Marine Le Pen and former PM Edouard Philippe.

Séjourné indicated his response to a Le Pen victory would be to "continue" in his role and defend EU interests, potentially leading to increased media presence or conflict with France.
