Saps launches probe after beloved K9 Sky injured at training facility

The South African Police Service (Saps) has launched a high-level investigation after Sky, a retired police dog, sustained an injury at one of the agency's training and veterinary facilities. Sky, who is no longer active in her role as a K9, had previously been known for escaping from kennels at her earlier K9 base in Limpopo. Saps officials explained that they decided to house Sky at the veterinary facility while they sought a new owner for her.

Investigation Spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathen revealed that the donation process was ongoing when the incident took place. Acting National Commissioner of Saps, Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane, has assigned a senior officer to probe the details surrounding Sky's injury. Mathen emphasized that Saps is profoundly concerned about Sky's well-being, noting that she played a significant role within the agency, having served alongside its members and being under their care.

The Commissioner has directed an exhaustive investigation into the incident, covering aspects such as Sky's living conditions, supervision, and adherence to established procedures and standards. Mathen stated that while they welcome the investigation, it would be hasty to accuse anyone of negligence or misconduct until all facts are known.

Saps reiterated its commitment to upholding the highest standards of animal welfare, stating that K9s are integral members of the Saps family and deserve to be treated with care, dignity, and compassion. They will take appropriate action if any deficiencies are identified. For now, the primary focus is on Sky's recovery and ensuring she receives the necessary medical attention.

In January, Eastern Cape police had issued a desperate call for dog donations to combat a severe shortage in their K9 units, warning that the lack of suitable dogs is hampering various criminal investigations, search and rescue efforts, and detection operations across the province.
