Rutgers men's basketball coach Steve Pikiell reveals cancer diagnosis

Rutgers men's basketball coach Steve Pikiell disclosed on Wednesday that he has been diagnosed with cancer earlier this year. The university did not specify the type of cancer in a statement published on their website, but confirmed that Pikiell recently underwent "a successful surgery." He and his doctors have a "kick-ass game plan" to complete treatment. Should Pikiell become unable to coach during the 2026-27 season, assistant coach Brandin Knight will take over as interim head coach.

Pikiell, who has been Rutgers' basketball coach since joining from Stony Brook ahead of the 2016-17 season, stated that he will remain involved with the team as much as possible during his cancer journey. He expressed confidence in Knight, the coaching staff, and the student-athletes, who he believes will lead the program well if he is absent. Pikiell has led Rutgers to two NCAA tournament appearances in his 10-season tenure, in 2021 and 2022, with a team record of 161-160 overall.

Rutgers athletic director Keli Zinn praised Pikiell's determination and strength, and thanked Knight for stepping up during this challenging time. The athletic director also commended the entire coaching staff for their compassion and support for Pikiell and the student-athletes. While there is no set timeline for Pikiell's full return, the university anticipates his eventual return to the sideline.
