PTA Tightens Rules for Telecom Equipment Imports and Deployment

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has implemented a mandatory Certificate of Compliance (CoC) for telecommunication equipment before it can be imported, deployed, or operated within Pakistan. This regulation, established under the Telecommunication Equipment Standards Regulations, applies to both locally manufactured and imported devices, as well as those set up across telecom networks.

According to a PTA statement released on Tuesday, the guidelines extend to all PTA licensees, manufacturers, and telecom equipment importers. The federal government sanctioned these regulations under Section 28 of the Pakistan Telecommunication (Re-organization) Act, 1996.

The new framework mandates that telecom equipment must align with specified technical standards before it can be utilized. These standards encompass crucial aspects such as Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC), Radio Frequency (RF), health and safety considerations, and additional relevant technical specifications. PTA emphasized that a CoC issued by the authority will be necessary for equipment import, deployment, or placement into operational service.

The regulatory framework was crafted following consultations with importers, telecom licensees, manufacturers, vendors, and other stakeholders within the industry.

PTA asserts that the regulations aim to ensure global compatibility and interoperability of telecom equipment, enhance service standards, and bolster local manufacturing and economic development.
