President Mahama inaugurates Independent Fiscal Council

President John Dramani Mahama recently inaugurated the Independent Fiscal Council, a body tasked with providing impartial oversight of the nation's fiscal policy. In a brief ceremony held in Accra, the President addressed the Council's five-member committee, emphasizing the significance of their role in supporting ongoing economic reforms.

The President highlighted the Council's mandate, which includes scrutinizing the government's fiscal decisions, assessing compliance with established rules, and providing sound recommendations in the national interest. During his remarks, Mahama stressed the importance of fiscal responsibility, stating that it extends beyond a legal obligation and is a moral duty towards future generations.

The Council, chaired by Dr Emmanuel Oteng Kumah, an international economic consultant and former Standard Chartered Bank Ghana Board Chairman, comprises experts from academia, think tanks, and public policy. In his speech, the President pledged his commitment to respecting the Council's independence and providing the necessary institutional support for it to carry out its duties effectively.

Dr Henry Akpenamawu Kofi Wampah, representing the Council, assured the President that the members would diligently fulfill their responsibilities, guided by evidence and the national interest, without any political influence.
