Five people killed in 'Flying Doctor' helicopter crash in Malaysia, authorities say

KUALA LUMPUR - A "flying doctor" service helicopter crashed in Malaysia on Tuesday, resulting in the death of five individuals, including medical staff, according to authorities and state news reports. The Health Minister, Dzulkefly Ahmad, stated that the pilot and four ministry employees were on board the aircraft that went down near Sarawak state's Long Lellang short take-off and landing airport.

These included a medical officer, an assistant medical officer, and two nurses on official duty. The disaster management committee confirmed that all five passengers perished in the crash. The "flying doctor" service typically employs aircraft to offer medical care, emergency transportation, and clinical services to rural or isolated areas.

However, search operations were hampered by hazy conditions, preventing air rescuers from reaching the site, as reported by the Sarawak police commissioner. The crash site was located in a remote area that necessitated a 10-hour road journey for rescue efforts. The civil aviation authority is currently probing the incident, with Malaysia declaring an emergency in Sarawak's Serian district due to hazardous air pollution levels a week prior.

The haze in Malaysia, caused by forest fires in neighboring Indonesia, has led to many areas recording unhealthy air quality, as evidenced by government data released on Wednesday.
