Political groups vow to uphold Tung's vision

Political parties and institutions on Wednesday vowed to continue Tung Chee-hwa's legacy, honoring his commitment to service and dedication to Hong Kong and the nation. Tung passed away on Tuesday at the age of 89. The Democratic Alliance for the Betterment of Hong Kong (DAB) stated that Tung was a lifelong patriot who cherished Hong Kong.

They pledged to maintain his spirit and strive for the welfare of both the nation and the Special Administrative Region (SAR). Tung believed that Hong Kong could actively participate in the nation's reform and opening-up, making valuable contributions, and that the country's growth would create new opportunities for Hong Kong to flourish further.

The Liberal Party echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing Tung's deep love for his country and his inspiring spirit, which continues to motivate them to actively engage in the SAR's development and integrate into the nation's progress. They will follow Tung's example of patriotism and dedication, firmly upholding the principle of "One Country, Two Systems," and wholeheartedly contribute to the nation's and Hong Kong's prosperity.

Nancy Ip, President of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, highlighted Tung's deep respect for higher education. She noted that he advocated for bolstering Hong Kong through education, technology, and talent development. His unwavering support for young people pursuing scientific advancement and serving society left an indelible mark on Hong Kong's educational and innovation landscape.

Simon Lee, a lawmaker who worked at the Our Hong Kong Foundation established by Tung, commented on his contributions being not only to Hong Kong but also to the nation and the intricate China-US relationship. Lee emphasized that the best way to honor Tung is to remain committed to public service, contribute more to the nation and Hong Kong, and carry forward his vision and dedication.
