Permohonan pengampunan Najib dibincang minggu ini?

Federal Legislative Council (LPWP) is reportedly set to consider the request for forgiveness from former Prime Minister Najib Razak during a meeting this weekend, according to sources. A source told FMT that Najib's request is expected to be raised among the matters discussed at the meeting. However, it is unclear whether the meeting will make a decision or simply consider the request.

Another source suggested that Najib may be allowed to serve the remaining part of his sentence as a house arrest, but confirmation remains pending on whether this option will be taken into account at the meeting. This development comes as attention is once again focused on Najib's efforts to secure forgiveness, with Pakatan Harapan (PH) today stressing that individuals implicated in corruption or misuse of power, especially high-profile cases, should serve their full sentence.

In a statement issued late at night by the Secretariat of the Parliament, PH said the coalition supports the government's efforts to combat corruption, factionalism, and misuse of power. PH noted that any individual implicated in corruption or misuse of power, particularly in high-profile cases, should serve their full sentence as determined by the court.

They also emphasized the importance of allowing the trial proceedings to run their course without any perception that they are influenced by other considerations. PH did not name Najib or any specific cases in the statement, which was issued in response to reports that LPWP was expected to meet on September 11 to consider various matters, including Najib's request for forgiveness related to his sentence for the 1MDB scandal.

Sin Chew Daily reported that Minister of Prime Minister's Department (Federal) Hannah Yeoh, who is a member of LPWP, gave an oath to the PH Presidential Secretariat on Tuesday evening. Najib, 72, was charged with corruption six years ago for misusing RM42 million from SRC International. He was fined RM210 million and sentenced to 12 years in prison, which began on August 23, 2022.

LPWP subsequently reduced his prison term to six years and the fine to RM50 million. On December 22 last year, High Court judge Alice Loke rejected Najib's request to serve the remaining six years of his prison sentence as a house arrest. Initially, Najib sought this decision, but then withdrew his appeal after his legal team filed a notice of discontinuance.
