Huawei heads to trial in US over Iran dealings, trade-secret theft allegations

A landmark trial in the United States has commenced for Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei, marking the culmination of a decade-long legal battle related to its business dealings in Iran. Jury selection commenced on Tuesday in Brooklyn, New York, as the case against Huawei unfolds amid heightened tensions between Washington and Beijing over technology competition.

Charges against Huawei include conspiracy to steal trade secrets from five US technology firms, lying about its dealings in North Korea, and supplying surveillance equipment to Iran for tracking protestors during 2009 anti-government demonstrations in Tehran. The trial will address a series of alleged violations such as US sanctions against Iran, money laundering, racketeering, wire fraud, and obstruction.

Jury deliberations are anticipated to span approximately three months, coinciding with Chinese President Xi Jinping's September 24 meeting with US President Donald Trump in Washington. Prospective jurors were required to complete a 27-page questionnaire, delving into their perspectives on China and Iran's governments.

Huawei maintains its innocence, pleading not guilty to all charges. The company asserts that the accusations are part of a broader campaign against China's technological advancement. Huawei's legal representative stated, "The government's overarching narrative is demonstrably false."

Should Huawei be found guilty, prosecutors seek to seize assets or proceeds derived from the alleged illegal activities. The potential financial penalty could amount to hundreds of millions to billions of dollars, contingent on the company's benefits from the wrongdoing and the severity of the alleged misconduct.
