Pakistan welcomes UK ban on illegal Israeli settlement goods

An Israeli court on Tuesday declined to issue a temporary injunction to halt a tender for over 1,200 illegal housing units in the E1 area of the occupied West Bank, as well as to suspend further actions to advance the settlement plans. The plaintiffs had filed the injunction request last month, demanding it be placed on hold due to the breach of a commitment by the State Attorney's Office to notify them in advance.

They argued that allowing the tender to proceed while the legal challenges were still ongoing could result in ground realities that would hinder the court's ability to provide effective relief if the petitions were ultimately successful. The Jerusalem District Court, however, stated that a significant amount of time would likely elapse before the tender is executed and before any physical alterations occur.

They also mentioned that the three petitions challenging E1 are expected to be decided before then. The court emphasized that the state has pledged not to argue that the progression of the tender process amounts to a fait accompli. Bidders have been made aware of the pending legal proceedings and informed that any rights obtained through the tender would be subject to the court's ruling.

Israel initiated the tenders for 1,234 homes to be constructed in the West Bank, with a deadline set prior to the October general election. The E1 is a stretch of land east of Jerusalem that has been under consideration for development for over two decades, but was put on hold under US pressure during previous administrations. Escalating waves of settler hostility and settlement expansion in the occupied West Bank are prompting even Israel's closest allies to express concern.

The October general election is often cited as a reason for the heightened level of settler violence, with the government careful not to provoke right-wing Israelis by cracking down on violence against Palestinians. The International Crisis Group, in a recent report, stated that Israeli actors should choose between building in E1 or conducting business with Europe.

The group added that Israeli settlement construction plans risk dividing the occupied West Bank and sending a message to those who advocate for Palestinian statehood. The EU has been hesitant to impose sanctions on Israeli settlements in recent months. Despite efforts from several member states, no consensus has been reached on trade sanctions similar to those reportedly being considered by the UK.

As the EU is Israel's largest trading partner, sanctions would likely have a more substantial impact on the Israeli economy than sanctions from the UK alone.
