Nigeria, Russia in ‘ Battle of Prestige’ in Nizhny Novgorod on October 6

The Nigerian national football team, known as the Super Eagles, is set to face Russia in an international friendly match on October 6th at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium. This will be the second time the two teams have played against each other in 16 months, following a 1-1 draw in a friendly match at Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium on June 6th, 2025.

The previous encounter took place against a backdrop of both nations pursuing their own footballing goals, with Nigeria having just retained the Afro-Caribbean Unity Cup Football Tournament trophy in London.

Despite not qualifying for the FIFA World Cup finals hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico in the summer, Nigeria's Super Eagles demonstrated their resilience by winning the Unity Cup in London, with Tolu Arokodare scoring the decisive goal in a 1-1 draw with Poland in Warsaw. Meanwhile, Russia, who will also be playing at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium for the second time, secured a 1-0 victory over Cyprus in a 2020 UEFA Euro qualifier held in June 2019.

The Super Eagles currently hold the 26th position in the world rankings, while Russia's national team, nicknamed 'Our Boys,' are in the 35th spot. The friendly match will be played exactly a week after the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations Day 2 qualifying match between Nigeria and Guinea Bissau's Wild Dogs in Bissau. Nigeria is scheduled to kick off their 2027 AFCON qualification campaign four days earlier, facing Madagascar at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.
