NGO calls for probe into former A-G over Tabung Haji RCI claims

The Sabah-based NGO G57 has called for a police investigation into former auditor-general Madinah Mohamad, alleging that her political connections may have influenced her role in the Tabung Haji (TH) royal commission of inquiry (RCI) report. The NGO's chairman, Zulkarnain Mahdar, lodged a report with the commercial crime investigation department, citing conflicting statements from Madinah and TH chairman Abdul Rashid Hussain regarding her involvement in the RCI proceedings.

Madinah claims she was not given the chance to testify before the panel, while Rashid disputes this, stating she was subpoenaed and provided 75 answers in a statutory declaration, which was officially recorded as her testimony as a witness. Zulkarnain also questioned Madinah's assertion that she found no evidence of theft or mismanagement during her tenure as auditor-general from 2017 to 2019, pointing out that parliamentary reports revealed TH lost nearly RM13 billion from 14 troubled investments.

He specifically highlighted TH's hotel leasing deal in Makkah and Madinah's association with Al-Rawda Real Estate Development and Project Management Co Ltd, which led to billions of ringgit in losses due to the use of unsecured promissory notes instead of standard bank guarantees. Zulkarnain also asked why the national audit department did not flag these transactions.
