Former childcare assistant charged with abusing two-year-old boy at Mentakab centre

TEMERLOH, September 9 — A 26-year-old former childcare assistant, Nor Ain Ashikin Husin, appeared in the Sessions Court today, charged with abusing a two-year-old boy at a childcare centre in Mentakab last month. The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge, which alleges that she engaged in actions capable of causing emotional injury to the child at a centre in Taman Keramat Indah, Mentakab, around 9:45 am on August 11.

Prosecutors have charged her under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, which carries a potential penalty of up to RM50,000 in fines or imprisonment for up to 20 years, or both, if found guilty.

The prosecution requested bail of RM10,000 with one surety, but the defence sought a reduced amount, citing that the accused is no longer employed, and the available surety can only provide RM5,000. Judge Jamaludin granted bail at RM5,000 with one surety and set October 14 for the next court appearance. Additionally, the judge barred the accused from any interference with the victim or prosecution witnesses while the case is being processed.

The police confirmed receiving a report of the alleged assault following the viral spread of a video depicting the incident on social media.
