Netflix Orders Lonesome Dove TV Series From East of Eden Showrunners

Netflix has secured the rights to adapt Larry McMurtry's Pulitzer Prize-winning Western novel Lonesome Dove into a series. The project will reunite Netflix with East of Eden co-showrunners Zoe Kazan and Jeb Stuart. McMurtry's 1985 novel tells the story of former Texas Rangers-turned-cowboys Augustus (Gus) McRae and Woodrow Call, who embark on a treacherous 3000-mile cattle drive to Montana.

CBS had previously adapted the book into a miniseries in 1989, starring Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones. Kazan and Stuart expressed their excitement about bringing the classic Western to life, praising the material and their desire to "hit the trail with Gus and Call." The series will be executive produced by Kazan, Stuart, Thomas Tull, Jillian Share, Jen Gorton, Jon Jashni, Diana Ossana, Curtis McMurtry, and others affiliated with the McMurtry Estate.

Lonesome Dove is part of a larger literary series by McMurtry, which includes Streets of Laredo (1993), Dead Man's Walk (1995), and Comanche Moon (1997). Additionally, there was a Lonesome Dove: The Series that aired in syndication during the 1990s. Kazan and Stuart's East of Eden will premiere on Netflix on October 1, with a cast including Florence Pugh, Christopher Abbott, Mike Faist, Hoon Lee, and Joe Anders.
