‘Lonesome Dove’ TV Series Ordered at Netflix From Zoe Kazan and Jeb Stuart

Netflix has secured a straight-to-series order for the adaptation of Larry McMurtry's Western novel "Lonesome Dove," produced by Zoe Kazan and Jeb Stuart. The decision came from a competitive process involving Teton Ridge Entertainment, who acquired the rights to the project and enlisted Kazan and Stuart to develop the series. Kazan and Stuart are set to rejoin as co-showrunners for "Lonesome Dove," following their work on Netflix's "East of Eden" adaptation, set to premiere on October 1.

The adaptation will focus on Gus McCrae and Woodrow Call, two Texas Rangers facing an uncertain future, as they embark on a final cattle drive from the Rio Grande to the untamed wilderness of Montana in pursuit of a dream they may have already outlived. The logline describes the show as a sweeping odyssey that explores themes of longing, friendship, frontier justice, and the pursuit of a meaningful life.

Kazan and Stuart will serve as co-showrunners, writers, and executive producers, with additional executive producers including Thomas Tull, Jillian Share, Jen Gorton, Jon Jashni, Diana Ossana, and Curtis McMurtry of the McMurtry Estate. Kazan and Stuart expressed their excitement about bringing McMurtry's western classic to life, noting their love and respect for the material.

Netflix's head of scripted series confirmed that "Lonesome Dove" is a great American story and that they are eager to work with Kazan and Stuart, praising their ability to delve into character depth, expansive settings, and emotional precision.
