Maharashtra To Push AI-Based Skilling, Industry Training And Centralised Placements For Engineering And Polytechnic Students

Mumbai: Maharashtra plans to prioritize industry-focused training, AI-based skill development, and a centralized placement system to enhance the employability of engineering and polytechnic students, according to Higher and Technical Education Minister Chandrakant Patil. Patil emphasized that technical education should move beyond merely issuing degrees and diplomas, instead equipping students with industry-relevant skills necessary for the job market of tomorrow.

During a review meeting on skill development, employability, and industry readiness of engineering and polytechnic students in Maharashtra, Patil introduced several initiatives proposed by the Indian Society for Technical Education (ISTE), including a centralized placement platform, a center for future skills, and the ISTE-SmartBridge AI Skilling Initiative.

The centralized placement platform aims to consolidate employment, internship, and apprenticeship opportunities into a single, easily accessible platform, fostering better coordination between educational institutions and industries. Additionally, the proposed Centre for Future Skills will offer training in emerging technologies, while the ISTE-SmartBridge AI Skilling Initiative seeks to provide students with a comprehensive AI education, ranging from foundational to advanced levels.

Patil stressed the importance of aligning curricula, training, and practical industry exposure to ensure students gain relevant skills that meet employers' demands. He also called for the development of a clear, time-bound roadmap for the implementation of skill-development programs, with a focus on institutionalizing these initiatives and ensuring their effective execution to help students transition from education to skills, skills to employment, and ultimately, to an empowered future.
