Korean football needs good news at the Asian Games

Korean football finds itself in need of some positive news after a disappointing World Cup campaign. The Asian Games commence next week in Japan, and it remains uncertain whether this event will mirror the outcome of the previous tournament in Mexico or surpass it. For the male national team, this competes with the World Cup in significance.

As the second-largest multisport competition after the Olympics, it presents an opportunity for athletes to earn an exemption from Korea's mandatory military service. Winning any medal at the Olympics or gold at the Asian Games grants players a reprieve from the 18 to 21 months of military service, with the exception of a few weeks of basic training.

This matter holds substantial weight, particularly for football players. An absence of military service increases the likelihood of being scouted by European clubs, improves prospects for those already playing abroad, and enhances career prospects, fame, and earnings by allowing them to bypass the K-League's army team obligation by the age of 28.

Consequently, Korea is anticipating either a repeat of Mexico or a more favorable outcome at the Asian Games.
