Korea, UNDP sign agreement on mine removal cooperation

Korea and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) have signed an agreement to cooperate on mine clearance efforts, as part of Seoul's broader initiative to improve public safety through global mine action standards, according to the South Korean defense ministry. The ministry announced a statement of intent (SOI) with UNDP, which outlines plans to share expertise and operational experience in mine clearance operations.

This marks Korea's first formal partnership with an international organization since the enactment of the country's Mine Action Act and the development of a long-term landmine policy roadmap. Seoul has been transitioning its approach to landmine clearance from a strictly military operation to a more comprehensive effort focused on public safety and land recovery.

To facilitate this shift, Seoul has sought partnerships with international bodies such as the UNDP, which establishes global mine action standards. The two entities will exchange knowledge and practices in mine action and engage in regular dialogue to ensure effective implementation of the agreed-upon measures.
