Joe Root welcomes Pietersen return to England setup

England Test captain Joe Root expressed support for Kevin Pietersen's return to the national setup, emphasizing that the team has evolved significantly since the cricketer's departure over a decade ago. Pietersen, a prolific run-scorer with 13,779 runs across all formats, has been appointed as a specialist mentor to the white-ball teams ahead of the 2027 World Cup in South Africa.

The 46-year-old's experience and knowledge are expected to benefit the squad, many of whom grew up watching Pietersen and were inspired to take up the sport by his talent. Root, who played alongside Pietersen during his England career, dismissed concerns over the veteran's outspoken nature, stating that the current environment is well-suited to harness his expertise.

"When you get someone involved you want them to be themselves and you want them to come into an environment for a reason. With his experience and knowledge about the game, and all that he can offer, I think he's going to be great," Root said. Pietersen will join Brendon McCullum's coaching staff for the upcoming white-ball series against Sri Lanka, working alongside Marcus Trescothick, Tim Southee, Jeetan Patel and Sarah Taylor.
