iPhone 18 Pro's Redesigned Vapor Chamber Triples Cooling Surface Area

Apple has unveiled a redesigned thermal system for the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. The centerpiece of this new system is a next-generation vapor chamber that boasts three times the surface area of the vapor chamber found in the iPhone 17 Pro. This larger vapor chamber works by constantly cycling deionized water through the system, resulting in significantly enhanced cooling performance.

The improved cooling allows Apple's A20 Pro chip to maintain higher performance levels for longer periods during heavy workloads.

In addition to the upgraded vapor chamber, Apple has also redesigned the silicon packaging for the iPhone 18 Pro and Max. The new packaging is inspired by the design of Apple's M-series chips. Instead of stacking the silicon die and memory, they are placed side by side, effectively removing the memory from the chip's thermal path. This allows the A20 Pro chip to directly connect to the vapor chamber, further optimizing the cooling process.

According to Apple, this combination of the new packaging, advanced thermal materials, and the larger vapor chamber delivers up to a 40% increase in sustained performance compared to its predecessor.
