iPhone 18 Pro Introduces 'Apple Reference Image' to Verify Photo Authenticity

Apple has unveiled Apple Reference Image, an innovative feature exclusively for the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, designed to assist users in confirming that a photo has not been tampered with after being captured. This feature is enabled by a new sensor integrated into the Main camera, which creates a unique digital signature at the pixel level during the moment of capture.

When a photo is taken in Reference mode, this signed data is transmitted to Private Cloud Compute, which processes it into what Apple terms an unalterable reference image, akin to possessing a digital negative. The reference image is then displayed alongside the original photo within the Photos app, enabling users to visually compare the two and discern if any alterations have been made.

Apple is also making these reference images accessible through APIs in iOS, iPadOS, and macOS 27, allowing third-party applications to incorporate this feature. Apple highlights this as part of a broader initiative to ensure image authenticity, complemented by existing image metadata and forthcoming support for the SynthID standard, which will aid in identifying images generated or edited using AI.

SynthID support will be introduced through a software update later in the year and will be incorporated into most edited images, contingent on the specific edits applied. It is worth noting that Apple Reference Image will not be accessible to users in China at launch due to regulatory constraints. However, in the EU, users with iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27 can still generate and view reference images, albeit for the iPhone 18 Pro models.
