Guterres pays tribute to Qatar’s late Father Emir at UN ceremony

A United Nations session paid tribute to Father Amir H H Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, highlighting his transformative role in modernizing Qatar and cementing its position as a prominent international partner in diplomacy, mediation, education, humanitarian efforts and sustainable development. The commemorative session at the UN Economic and Social Council Chamber brought together senior UN officials, member state representatives and regional and international groups to honor Sheikh Hamad's contributions and reflect on his legacy.

Opening the session, UN General Assembly President H E Khalilur Rahman delivered remarks, followed by a minute of silence in memory of Sheikh Hamad. Subsequent formal statements were made by UN Secretary-General H E António Guterres and Qatar's Permanent Representative to the UN, Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed deep condolences to Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, Qatar's ruling family, and the nation. He described Sheikh Hamad as a visionary leader who helped transform Qatar and shape its modern history, noting the significant economic, social, and institutional changes during his tenure.

Guterres highlighted notable milestones, such as Qatar's growing share of the global economy, the adoption of a permanent constitution, investments in higher education and research via Qatar Foundation and Education City, and the launch of Qatar National Vision 2030.

Guterres emphasized that Sheikh Hamad's legacy extended beyond Qatar's borders, as the country became a trusted mediator and partner in diplomacy, contributing to peace-building and international cooperation. The UN chief also acknowledged Qatar's expanding humanitarian role and its strong partnership with the United Nations, praising the country's support for various humanitarian efforts and mediation initiatives. Guterres concluded by stating that Sheikh Hamad's memory would inspire future generations.
