Google to invest €13bil in AI infrastructure in Finland

Helsinki, Finland - Google announced on Wednesday that it plans to invest a minimum of €13 billion (US$15 billion) in digital infrastructure across Finland over the next two years. This represents Google's largest single investment in Europe and highlights Finland's role as a leader in responsibly building AI infrastructure.

The investments will encompass data centers to support AI models, clean energy projects, and dedicated funds for local biodiversity, education, research, and workforce development initiatives. The company has also entered partnerships with municipalities in Hamina, Kajaani, Muhos, and Vaala.

Google's statement emphasized that these investments will power several of the tech giant's services, including its AI chatbot Gemini. Finland's Prime Minister Petteri Orpo hailed the decision, stating that it demonstrates the value of the data economy and will yield lasting benefits for both parties.

Google's expansion in Finland began in 2009 when the company acquired a former paper mill and converted it into a data center in Hamina. The construction phase for the new investments is projected to begin in 2027 and 2028, contributing an estimated €3.6 billion annually to Finland's GDP. Over 37,000 jobs across the country are expected to be created, with 16,000 of these positions in the construction sector.

Google's decision reflects the country's favorable climate for data centers, characterized by a cool climate, stable electricity costs due to nuclear power, and abundant wind and hydro power. As Finland grapples with high unemployment and sluggish economic growth, attracting investments in the data sector has become a top priority for the right-wing government of Prime Minister Orpo.
