Finance Ministry proposes 10.6-trillion-peso budget for 2027 with boosts to health, security and education

The Mexican federal government has proposed a budget for 2027 that totals approximately 10.6 trillion pesos (around US $627.8 billion), marking a slight increase in real terms compared to this year's expenditure. Finance Minister Édgar Amador Zamora submitted the proposal to Congress, which will vote on the plan later this year. The proposed budget is focused on improving the well-being of families and strengthening economic growth, with an emphasis on health, security, and education.

The proposed budget includes significant increases in spending for the following sectors:

1. Health care: 1.1 trillion pesos (US $65 billion), a 10.9% increase from 2026, with resources directed toward strengthening infrastructure and guaranteeing the supply of medicine, as well as opening new IMSS-Bienestar healthcare centers to support universal healthcare initiatives.

2. Education: 1.3 trillion pesos (US $77 billion), a 7% increase from 2026, allocated for constructing new schools and other educational reforms.

3. Social and welfare programs: Over 1 trillion pesos (US $59 billion), with half of the allocation dedicated to pension payments for seniors and the remainder intended for scholarship schemes and employment initiatives.

4. Interest and debt repayments: 331.4 billion pesos (US $20 billion), which accounts for around 1 in every 7 pesos of government expenditure in 2027.

5. Security: 331.4 billion pesos (US $20 billion), an 11.6% increase from 2026, primarily going toward the Ministry of National Defense, which oversees the Mexican Army, as well as the Security Ministry, Defense Ministry, and Navy Ministry.
