Driveway of coastal mansion owned by Nicolas Cage collapses

The driveway of a coastal mansion in Malibu, California, owned by actor Nicolas Cage, collapsed early Tuesday morning. The collapse exposed a significant hole in front of the residence. A gas leak occurred just before 6 a.m. due to the collapse, leading authorities and a utility company to respond. Southern California Gas Company (SoCalGas) reported that the leak was under control within a few hours.

However, as a precaution against coastal erosion, SoCalGas temporarily shut off natural gas services for an 85-foot section of the street.

The property, which was recently sold in 2024, was reportedly purchased by Cage from the previous owner, according to property records. The mansion faced damage during a coastal flooding advisory in the Los Angeles area following Hurricane Marie, which had earlier been classified as a hurricane before evolving into a tropical storm. Although the hurricane did not make landfall, it caused heavy rainfall and generated strong waves along the Southern California coastline over the holiday weekend.

In an effort to prevent further damage, the city of Malibu restricted access to five homes on the street on Tuesday, according to an official statement. The private neighborhood is situated between the ocean and the famous Pacific Coast Highway. Cage, who is 62 years old, recently starred in the Amazon series "Spider-Noir" and is set to play John Madden in a biographical film about the NFL coach and commentator later this year. He has appeared in over 100 films and won an Oscar for his role in "Leaving Las Vegas."
